Durham Performing Arts Center, Durham, NC
The Durham Performing Arts Center is a 2,800 seat proscenium theatre designed to accommodate touring stage shows, concerts, and locally produced performances. The facility is also the primary stage for Durham and surrounding areas to view Nederlander Broadway production road shows and Duke University’s celebrated American Dance Festival. The project is set in the American Tobacco Historic District, a ten acre multi-use development that includes multi-family housing, upscale retailing and premium office spaces.
The theatre combines a simply composed theatrical house with multi-level public lobby. The house and its support areas are deeply embedded from the urban context of its surrounding environment. The lobby reaches out to the surrounding urban fabric, accentuating vistas to Durham’s central business skyline and American Tobacco. Movement upward through the lobby is animated by two grandly scaled staircases that wrap the building’s perimeter. Custom finishes in a monochromatic palette reinforce the energy performances create and a space for North Carolina to celebrate Broadway.
The theatre was a recipient of the 2006 and 2008 NC AIA Merit Design Award and designed to achieve LEED 2.01 Gold certification.
